Homeroom & Performance Procedures

    HOMEROOM PROCEDURES

At Southern Lehigh High School all instrumentalists and bandfront members are also a self-contained homeroom.  The primary reason for this is the need to make use of homeroom and class passing time during the fall season to finish work that has begun during summer band camp. It is also invaluable for transacting band or orchestra business throughout the entire year.  The paragraphs below outline the procedures to be followed in Instrumental Homeroom on days where there is early band rehearsal, and days where there is no early band rehearsal.

Instrumental Homeroom is currently housed in the Instrumental Room.   With the exception of plain water, there is to be no food or drink in the music facilities at any time.   Any student enrolled in Orchestra, Band or Bandfront, or is a manager, is to be in Instrumental Homeroom.   It is imperative that the procedures be adhered to for accurate attendance since there are legal implications connected with school attendance policies.

Students who desire to eat breakfast at school, whether purchased at school or brought from home, may eat in the area designated for eating (currently the cafeteria).   Students are NOT to eat/drink in the hallway.  Students are still responsible for arriving at homeroom on time as outlined below.

    1) All students shall report to homeroom no later than 7:45 a.m., and must be IN homeroom and seated by the second bell, otherwise you will be marked absent.

    2) Any student late for homeroom MUST present

    a) a signed pass from a teacher, guidance office, etc.,  or

    b) tardy slip

in order to be admitted to homeroom.  This is in order to document the presence or absence of students.   Students may NOT  “check in” prior to 7:45 in order to go elsewhere in the building, nor may they “sign in” on the board.

    3) No student may leave homeroom until AFTER attendance has been taken.  Generally this is after the Pledge and the moment of silence.

    4) Students shall SIT in ASSIGNED SEATS so that those taking attendance can find them.

    5) Attendance (absentee lists) are held until 7:56, at which time the attendance will be submitted to the office.  Students arriving in homeroom after that time must obtain a tardy slip from the office.

    PERFORMANCE PROCEDURES

    HOME FOOTBALL GAMES

In order to ensure that we are on time for home football game performances, members are to follow the procedures set forth below:

    1.  Dress at home - Band T-shirt, trousers, white socks, Drillmasters/boots.

    2.  Ensure that the balance of your uniform is with you - band jacket & gloves (in garment bag), hat (in hat box).  Ensure that you have your instrument & music.

    3.  Use the bathroom.

    4.  Leave your residence so as to get you to the High School not less than 15 minutes prior to warm-up time.

    5.  On arrival at the high school, use the lavatory facilities if you've not done so at home.  Report to the instrumental room and get instrument and music ready for warm-up/tune-up.   Attendance will be taken during warm-up.

    6.  Upon completion of the warm-up routine, section leaders will tune while all other members are to get into full uniform.  Music folios are to be put in "rolling cages."  In cold weather, blankets, etc are also to be put in the cages.  Music Parents will distribute plumes as you leave the Instrumental Room.

    7.  Once you are dressed and with your instrument, report to the "boiler pit" and get in formation for parade to the practice field.   Once assembled, the Band will parade to the practice field as a unit, and a dress rehearsal of the field show will then take place.

    8.  Following the dress rehearsal, members are to again get in formation for parade to the stadium.  The Band will parade to the stadium as a unit.

    9.  On arrival at the stadium, the Band will be dismissed to the bleachers by section.   When the visiting band begins their performance, all members will stand and watch the visiting band's performance in a respectful manner.

AWAY FOOTBALL GAME, PARADES & FESTIVALS

In order to ensure that we are on time for away football game/parade/festival performances, members are to follow the procedures set forth below:

    4.  Leave your residence so as to get you to the High School not less than 15 minutes prior to departure time.

    5.  On arrival at the high school, use the lavatory facilities if you've not done so at home.  Report to the instrumental room and get instrument & music.  Small instruments are to be transported on the bus; large instruments are to be taken to the trailer for loading.  Music (away football games only) is to be placed in the rolling cage.   Cold weather gear may be placed in the cages as well.  Attendance will be taken during arrival.

    6.  Board your assigned bus with your garment bag & hat box.  Role call will be taken on the bus prior to departure.

    7.  Upon arrival at the destination, dress into full uniform.  Do not stand on seats or sit on seatbacks.

    8.  Exit the bus and get a plume from a Music Parent.  Get your instrument.  Empty cases need to be returned to the trailer.  Once your instrument is assembled move away from the trailer or to an area designated by the director or field staff.

    9.  Warm-up/tune-up will take place in a circle formation, and the Band will then get into formation appropriate for the performance (show entrance order, parade formation, etc).

    INCLEMENT WEATHER PROCEDURES

    1.  The Field Staff, in conjunction with the Director and the Band Front Instructor, will set up a telephone chain to notify students when plans are changed due to weather.

    2.  It is the responsibility of the students in the chain to insure that the telephone chain is not broken.  If your person is not at home, call the next person on the list.

    3. Do not rely on the word of friends or neighbors - the call you receive via the telephone chain is the only legitimate notification you are to heed.

    4. If you receive no call, call the person BEFORE you on the chain, and keep going up the chain until you make contact with another Band member.

    5. If you are unsuccessful in reaching any other member, report for the event as scheduled.
