Study tips

  • Learning a foreign language

    • Study every day – you cannot cram a language
    • Split up your studying into 15-30 minute time slots
    • Attend and participate in class every day – this is the most valuable practice time because you get immediate feedback and the opportunity to practice speaking the language with others
    • Give yourself permission to make mistakes
    • Write out vocabulary words (over and over if you need to) to practice spelling – just reading your notes does not help you internalize new vocabulary
    • Speak out loud to yourself in the new language when you study
    • If you are a visual learner illustrate new vocabulary words, it will help you recall them later
    • Ask for help as soon as you need it (don’t wait until it is too late)
    • Read and listen to Spanish whenever possible – Even if you can’t understand every word, you will be learning pronunciation and picking up new vocabulary
