Class time was spent today reviewing for tomorrow's word master's challenge.  The students chose a goal of 175.  We can do this!!! Make sure you know the definitions of words from past lists, such as privation, girth, schism, charlatan, redolent, recondite, etc. (hint, hint.)  Also use your pink sheet to practice analogies and play "memory" with your flashcards.  Everyone study hard!!!  We can do this!

Happy November! In class today we completed the pre-reading for Legend of Sleepy Hollow and read up to p. 6.  Students completed the comprehension monitoring questions.  We learned that Washington Irving loved to describe.  His descriptive writing might make it difficult for us to get into the meaning of the story.  We will apply our strategies and work through it.  This is a difficult read, but we are up for the challenge!!!

We previewed and made predictions about our next short story - The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.  This is a high lexile book, so the students will really have to stretch and apply their Super 6 reading strategies (learned in 7th grade) to comprehend this. This is the perfect story to do this because so many of us already have an idea about this famous legend.

    9/19/16
Today was Poetry Monday.  Again this year, I plan to start each week with a poem.  By doing so, we are all exposed to different forms of poetry and are given an opportunity to enjoy the language apply what we are learning and to just enjoy the language.

We read our first short story today; it is called The Dinner Party by Mona Gardner.  Students discussed some questions, and we will talk about the theme tomorrow.

Thanks to all of the parents who came out last night for our Open House.  I am excited for this school year.  Today we finished taking notes on short story terms and created posters about the vast types of symbolism used in literature.  These include colors, animals, season, etc.  We did not get to read The Dinner Party (so EW and SJ, don't worry about this - just bring the book back on Monday.)
Have a nice weekend! Go Spartans!

Students worked either independently or with their groups to draft their narrative.  Organizing a short story is important.  Remember you need a beginning, middle, and an end.  You should have a problem and a solution.

We discussed the last and hardest write trait today - Voice.  Students are currently working on writing a narrative in which they are applying all 6 write traits.  Each group chose a photograph and they are working to come up with a narrative of at least 6 paragraphs.  Students can co-write or work independently.

In Gifted Seminar, all students have now chosen their topics and have been taught how to use Typing Agent.  They are expected to practice for 15 minutes - 3 times per week.  This month we are focusing on accuracy, so they can type slowly.
