Reading & Language Arts with Mrs. Post and Mrs. Hamm

  • Students in my reading and language arts class will be working on the following skills:  decoding, reading fluency, comprehension, spelling, and writing.  We will be using a variety of programs and methods.  Feel free to contact me to discuss your child's program.

    9/16/15 - We started reading our first story "When Charlie McButton Lost Power" by Suzanne Collins.  We will hopefully be ready to test this Friday or early next week. Ask your student about the story, they really seemed to enjoy it.  

    Vocabulary Skill 

    Homonyms - multiple meaning words

    - Students will be asked to use context clues to determine the meaning of a word

    Comprehension Skill

    Literary Elements (aka Story Elements) - this includes setting, characters, and theme

    Setting - WHEN and WHERE a story is taking place

    Characters - the people, animals, or objects in a story.  You should also be able to identify their feelings and traits.

    Theme - the main message or lesson of the story.  This is not specifically stated, you will have to infer.

    9/21/15 - First spelling test Friday, 9/25 

    Look for pre-tests and spelling packets in your student's homework folders.
