Am I permitted to work part-time or as a Long Term Substitute to obtain PE status?

YES, you can work part-time, BUT remember that you must complete three (3) years of equivalent full-time service as a TPE. For instance, if you work half-time (0.5), you must complete six (6) years of service as a half-time employee to qualify for PE status. (See States v. Punxsutawney Area School District, Teacher Tenure Appeal No. 10-85, School Law Information Exchange, Vol. 23,No. 73 (1986)]

Likewise, if you are a substitute teacher, you can only count the years of service in which you were the teacher-of-record. At Southern Lehigh SD, the only substitute permitted to serve as the teacher-of-record is a Long-Term Substitute (i.e., one working at least 70 school days). [See Kielbowick v. Ambridge Area School Board, 668A.2d 1128 (Pa. Cmwlth. 1995)]
