• Services and Programs for Students who are Struggling

    Please contact the SLMS Counseling Office if you have questions concerning any of the following programs. 

    Tier I: Supports available/offered to all Students:


      • Sapphire tutorial to setup grade monitoring

      • Access to Counseling Office Services – Please contact Mrs. Cooper, School Counselor, at coopera@slsd.org or Mrs. Rich, School Psychologist, at riche@slsd.org for more information or to schedule an appointment for your child.


      • November Teacher Conferences - Information for sign-ups will be sent out to parents.


      • Social-Emotional Learning lessons and activities provided through Spartan Period. 


    Tier II: Supports available for students needing more than the Tier 1 supports




      • MS Afterschool Tutoring -  Southern Lehigh Middle School will again be offering Tutoring for students. This year, we will be offering tutoring in the areas of Math, Science, and ELA. This will be offered Mondays through Thursdays from 2:45-3:45 in the library and we are teaming up with students from the High School who are members of the National Honor Society to provide additional individualized and small group support during that time.   If you are interested in having your child participate in tutoring, please complete the linked form so we can ensure we have the proper staffing and supervision to meet student needs.    


      • NHS Tutoring – After school tutoring offered by High School Students in the National Honor Society (NHS.) See link below for signing up.  Parents are responsible for transportation home at the end of the tutoring session. Click here for tutoring sign ups.


      • NJHS Tutoring – Middle School National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) students are available to tutor in different subject areas. If you are interested in working with an 8th grade NJHS student, please contact Mrs. Halloran at hallorank@slsd.org or Mrs. Grubb at grubbm@slsd.org for more information.


      • Caron Foundation Group Services: Students have the opportunity to participate in groups with a facilitator from the Caron Foundation. Students can participate in these groups based on need, regardless of academic success. Please contact the MS Counseling Office or Mrs. Cooper at coopera@slsd.org if you are interested in receiving more information for these groups. Possible group offerings include:
        • Anger Management
        • Changing Families
        • Grief and Loss
        • Kids of Promise®: for students impacted by the substance use disorder/addiction of a loved one
        • Project CONNECT®: for students trying to reduce or quit the use of nicotine
        • Resiliency
        • Stress Management
        • Teen Intervene: for students who have acknowledged using substances
        • Teen Issues 


      • Study Skills Groups offered through the Counseling office - Students who are academically struggling can participate in a study skills support group.  This group is offered to students who are failing 2 or more courses at any time during the year.  If you would like your child to participate in one of these support groups, please contact Mrs. Cooper at coopera@slsd.org


      • Parent-Teacher conferences by request- Teachers are available to meet with parents during their prep periods.  Please contact the specific teacher or the MS Counseling office or Mrs. Cooper at coopera@slsd.org if you are interested in setting up a conference for your child.  


    Tier III: Supports available for students who need more than the Tier I or Tier II supports


      • Project SUCCESS - This is a mentoring program offered by SLMS in conjunction with the Center for Humanistic Change. Students meet in a group or individually with the mentor from the Center for Humanistic Change weekly. The mentor will be meeting with students to discuss topics such as but not limited to, coping skills, strategies for school success, motivational strategies, and how to identify and resist social or situational pressures.       • The SLMS Child Study Team (CST) - A team of individuals at the middle school convene to discuss students who are struggling academically, socially, and/or emotionally and work to put supports in place to assist that student. If you are interested in having your child added to the Child Study Team list, please email Mrs. Cooper, coopera@slsd.org or Mrs. Rich, riche@slsd.org


      • Assistance from the School Social Worker If any family needs resources in the community or are having financial difficulties, please contact Mrs. Mullay at mullaya@slsd.org.
