Meet Mrs. DeSanctis

  • Hello and welcome to my classroom for the 2016-2017 school year! This will be my thirteenth year teaching in the Southern Lehigh School District. I will be teaching math and science this year, and will be working together with Mrs. Dill who will be teaching language arts and social studies.  I am confident this will be a wonderful year.  :)

Teaching is actually a second career for me. Prior to becoming a teacher, I managed an international modeling agency in New York City for twenty-two years. While I really enjoyed my job, I left the business world in 1999 in order to be more available for my two children. After spending some time at home, I decided to return to school in pursuit of a teaching degree.

I graduated from DeSales University in 2004 with a B.A. in Elementary Education. At that time I also became certified in Special Education. I was thrilled when I was hired by Southern Lehigh School District in 2004 to teach first grade at Hopewell Elementary. I spent two wonderful years in first grade before moving to fourth grade.

I completed my Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Moravian College in 2009. Completing my thesis, "Helping Students Learn to Love Mathematics: High Motivation Problem Solving in Heterogeneous And Homogeneous Groups," was an incredible learning experience. It was a qualitative study that examined what grouping methods motivated students the most while participating in challenging mathematics problem solving activities using cooperative learning. The experience reinforced the necessity of the teacher's role to be attentive to the student's needs, as students' attitudes, abilities, relationships, and social skills all affected the collaborative experience. Problem solving in mathematics continues to be a significant part of my instruction, and it is especially important in lieu of our new 'Common Core State Standards,' where problem solving is front and center!

I live on eleven beautiful acres in the rolling hills of Bucks County with my husband, John. We have two grown children, and we recently became the proud parents of a little beagle puppy.
